Does Florida Remain Vulnerable to Fuel Disruption from Hurricanes?

Florida relies on gas-fired generation to meet over 38 percent of the state's electricity requirements. Going into this summer's hurricane season, there is lingering concern about fuel supply disruptions as flows of natural gas into Florida have increased on a year-over-year basis by over 700 million cubic feet per day, or 34 percent. A number of gas infrastructure projects have been proposed for 2008-10 that will diversify and increase Florida's natural gas supplies. Although the state is still at risk, Florida's vulnerability to supply disruptions has been mitigated by

* an increase in Petal Gas Storage's capability to backstop natural gas flows into Florida
* higher oil product inventories
* higher coal inventories
* limited, but probably adequate, petroleum coke inventories
