Overview

Provincial Profile: Shanghai

Continuing its series of profiles on China's provincial energy markets, CERA's China Energy team examines Shanghai. In the past few years Shanghai has emerged as the financial and commercial center of China . Along with neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, Shanghai forms the global economic powerhouse of the Yangtze River Delta. But insufficient energy supplies are a bottleneck on the city's economic growth. To solve this, Shanghai has taken the initiative on policies to manage peak electricity consumption, has plans to develop a liquefied natural gas terminal, and is pushing the expansion of electric generation capacity in surrounding provinces.

* Shanghai is China's largest city and most advanced and open economy.
* This industrial and business powerhouse offers the best investment environment.
* Coal plays the main role in energy supply, especially for power generation.
